Planting Tomatoes
Most people go to Home Depot, Lowes or the favorite nursery to buy their tomato plants. This is fine. However, do not buy a plant with tomatoes already on it. You want to buy one that is tall and lanky and is in a three to five inch pot. When you plant your tomato plant you will pinch off all the leaves except the very top two or three leaves. If you get a plant that has one of the peat pots, remove that from around the roots. I know it says you can plant it anyway, but you do not want anything around the roots that will keep the roots from growing. Then make a trench in your soil. Put the tomato plant on its side with the top few leaves you saved just above ground. Be careful not to break the stem. Then cover the root ball and plant stem with soil. Tomatoes are the only plant you can do this with. All the little hairs that are on the plant stem will become roots, lots of roots. It is the roots that produce the fruit. The more roots, the more fruit. The plant will become huge just from the few leaves that you left at the top. Even if you plant your tomato as a patio tomato in a container, you want to do this.
Thanks for the info. We just moved into a new home and am looking to start doing what you do. Your blog is helpful.
