Desert Cactus Garden – Barrel Cactus
Many desert cactus gardens will contain a barrel cactus. This on is a fish hook barrel cactus. The flowers on this one are a bright yellow, but they are normally orange or red. The buds are on the top left of the picture. They are a little pink. The fruit is also yellow. There is a fruit below the center flower. All fruit produced by cactus are edible. The barrel cactus blooms and sets fruit in the summer. The fruit of the barrel cactus contains many little black seeds and the flesh of the fruit has a lemony task. Both the seeds and fruit are edible. I like to add the seeds to my oatmeal. Cactus fruit is high in vitamin C and A.
